Meet Toby!

I have to admit, I’m addicted to my dog. From the moment I laid eyes on him, I knew he was “the one”.

Finding Toby

After our last big dog passed away at the age of 10, I decided it was time for a change. As much as I’ve enjoyed my big dogs over the years, I really wanted a lap dog. A dog I could still take on walks and play fetch with, but one that

would curl up in my lap or snuggle up next me (easily) on the couch or bed.

My hunt for a small dog started with looking at Yorkies. The breeder we went to visit listened carefully as we described what we were looking for. She asked me to keep an open mind, as she wanted to introduce me to a puppy that wasn’t a Yorkie, but one she thought would make the perfect fit in our home.

She had 1 dog left from a litter of Cockapoo-Bichon Frises. Enter our sweet Toby!

Small Dogs Have the Biggest Hearts

Needless to say, we fell in love instantly with this tiny, playful baby. 2-1/2 years later, there is no doubt in my mind that deciding to get a small dog was a great decision!

Of course, even among small dogs, they all have different personalities, pluses and minuses. With our Toby, I can say I’ve found in him the most loving, loyal little creature I’ve ever met in my life. I adore him and, unless he fakes it really well, he adores me back 🙂

At the time of this writing, Toby is almost 3 years old  – boy, does time fly! – and we’ve been through all kinds of fun adventures together and I look forward to many, many more.

Having a small dog isn’t always easy – we’ve had allergy problems, toy issues (he’s an aggressive chewer!), and had to also adjust to having such a small companion. Small Dogs, Big Hearts is a way for me to share with others who love small dogs what we’ve tried, what works, what doesn’t – and hopefully learn from others along the way, too!

This site is dedicated not just to Toby, but to all things small dogs. If you already have a small dog, I don’t need to convince you how wonderful they are. If you’re considering a small dog, I hope reading along will help you fall in love just like I have!
